Do you have daughters, granddaughters, nieces, neighbor girls? I started making these quick skirts early last month... My granddaughters love them...

I am sure there are numerous tutorials out there that show how to make a quick gathered skirt. This is how I do it...

You will need

Prewashed fabric for skirt (amount will depend on measurements of child)
piece of cardboard or card stock
Matching thread
1 inch wide Non Roll Elastic
pins
rotary cutter
cutting mat
sewing machine

The first thing we need to do is figure out how big your skirt needs to be.. Measure the waist and length of the child. Add 1 inch to the waist measurement and 3 inches to the length measurement and WRITE THESE NUMBERS DOWN.. As fast as these skirts are to make you will need those numbers more than once. Make sure you take the waist measurement at the place on the abdomen where the skirt will sit. This might not be the natural waist. The girls wear their skirts around their hips now.. My granddaughters wear a size 5 or 6 (depending on which granddaughter) but I make their skirts from the same measurements. One wears hers a little lower nearer her hips.

So for my 4 and 6 year old granddaughters I buy half yard of fabric and have some left over scraps.

Waist measurement 22 so I added 1 inch to equal 23
Skirt length is 10 so I added 3 inches to equal 13

Cut a piece of card stock 1 1/2 inches wide by the length of the piece of card stock. You can also use a piece of card board from a cereal box. You want the length to be between 10 - 12 inches.

So now we have our supplies -

Prewashed fabric
cut piece of card board or card stock
sewing notions..

Lets get started.. (fabric color will change within the photos as I made two different skirts.)

Using your rotary cutter, mat and ruler cut a rectangle that is WOF by the length measurement.

Mine is WOF x 13 inches

Open up the folded edges and with right sides together pin the two shorter edges together. Sew a 1/2 inch seam.

You should now have a tube of fabric with pressed folded edges at top and bottom. If you are using directional fabric now is the time to decide which is the top and which is the hem.

Turn your tube of fabric right side out and stitch along the hem. I line up the edge of my sewing foot and move my needle to the left two notches. Do whatever works with your machine.

Now lets work at the waist line. At the center back seam, place a pin 1 1/2 inches down from the top edge of the skirt. Don't pin the short folded edge. Just use the pin to mark.

This is one of the three skirts I made the same afternoon..

For my older granddaughter who has a 28 1/2 inch waist and a 15 inch length I would buy 1 yard of fabric, cut two pieces 18 inches x WOF and seam them together along one short edge.. Then follow the same directions. This makes a nice full skirt.. but one WOF makes it kind of skimpy...

I hope all of this makes sense.. If you have any questions just email me.
I quickly responded and was chosen .. Kristy blogs at St. Louis Folk Victorian, and is president of the StLMQG.. When she isn't working...or going to flea markets...or sewing.....it seems she has been doing a bit of designing..

Her first pattern has just been released and as one of the testers I have the privilege of giving away a "autographed" copy of her pattern.. Yes, autographed!!

I present to you, (drum roll please!)
Where does the time go? We have started working on the house again... We moved here last October and of course you don't do a lot outside that time of year. Now we are catching up for the last twentyumpteen years of no one doing anything in the yard...

So far we have (and I use the term WE very loosely here)
Dumped and spread 11 truckloads of top soil the front yard..
Planted grass and covered it in straw and watered it every night until this week when the rains came flooding down in our area..
Built two planter boxes using stone, then filled them with top soil and planted grapes and Hosta..
Cut the grass three times...
Pulled out multiple pieces of wood t
at was stuck haphazadardly all over the back yard...We have no idea why it was put there or why it was painted blue.
Pulled down a post with a non-working bug zapper hanging from it..
Started the huge job of closing in underneath the deck...
Planted tomatoes...Ok...ok...that one doesn't count as I bought two tomato plants already in the container with the cage attached and just had to set it on the deck...

I have also been keeping up with my Bee blocks..

These were Tess's blocks for April..

Today I got Carolyn's block done...

And started working on a new quilt.. I have 12 or 13 FQ's and after working most of the afternoon I have these blocks finished. I am using a new ruler I bought at the AQS Show in Paducah this year. You make a pinwheel block, cut it with this special ruler and then add a triangle to four sides to make the square block... It's a lot of cutting, pressing, sewing, pressing, trimming, cutting, sewing, pressing, cutting, sewing, pressing and a final cut... I am kind of enjoying it.. I am calling it Winding Ways although I have no idea if that is the name of the block..

They finish at 6 inches so it's going to take me a while to get a large enough quilt for the guest room..

I bought the ruler from the designer who has a website here... I have the smaller size ruler which makes blocks from two inches to six inch finished. The larger one makes blocks up to a twelve inch...

So, yea...I went to Paducah this year...This was my 12th year and for the first time I stayed for longer than one day...Four of us left Tuesday morning and came back Thursday.. We had a great time and I didn't buy all that much.. I did buy a quilt kit, which I have NEVER done before..I turned the corner and there was the quilt hanging in the booth and I picked it up and bought it... It came with all the fabric and pattern and it will be the next project. I also bought a 12 1/2 inch square up ruler..and a ruler by Bloc Loc that is truly unique.. There is a groove carved out of wrong side so the seams of your block sit into the grooves and allows you to trim the block without movement.. I bought the flying geese ruler... and I think that is really all I bought... oh no...i forgot...I bought some Kona at Hancocks of Paducah...and some great decorator weight fabric to do this...
I've been "tagged" by Cindy over at Hyacinth Quilt Designs... If you don't already read her blog, grab yourself a cup of tea (coke, coffee or whatever) and head on over. Cindy in a prolific quilter and designer...We both belong to the St Louis Modern Quilt Guild and she teaches machine quilting at a local quilt shop. She has written books, lectured and taught classes...and she gets the most done of anyone in blogworld...Every time I open her page she has made another quilt...and quilted it...and it's bound... sheesh...I can't even begin to keep up with her...

I am to answer the following questions and then tag forward...

I worked in a local hospital taking phone calls from the public and making appointments for everything from a mammogram to a blood draw to an xray to surgery... it required a lot of customer service... The goal was to make the customer happy, whether that customer was the public, the hospital department or the physician...It was hard work and I loved it.

We live out here in the middle of freakin nowhere...our only option for internet service is satellite... or dial up... The satellite is ok most of the time...it's not the fastest and there are limits on downloading and uploading... Four weeks ago, we realized that our satellite company was offering four new packages with faster speeds and higher downloads (or uploads or whatever loads)... I called to get us set up...

No problems...I get the package I want at the speed I want at the price I want... Too good to be true, right? Yea...
Their computer gets an error..
I'm told to call back in 72 hours.. to reorder
I call back..
Their computer is updating..
I'm told to call back in 72 hours...to reorder..
I call back..
I get the package I want at the speed I want at the price I want...
Their computer gets an error..
I'm told to call back in 72 hours...
I call back...
Computer error on their part...
Can I call back "MOUNTAIN TIME"... um...why can't I call back in MY TIME??? No response...
I call back in two hours as mountain time is two hours different than central time. (that's really all I can figure out to do as silly as it sounds)
Computer is still in error mode...
Please call back in 72 hours...
This continued until last Wednesday when I was told that the package I wanted was no longer available...as of the day before... EXCUSE ME!! After 1 hour I was told that she would "manually add the order" and we would receive a call within 72 hours to schedule the installation day...

Will it surprise you to find out there was no call? I didn't think so..

Today I finally talked to a supervisor...I didn't get the package I wanted...I didn't get the price I wanted...but I did get an installation date and $50 for "my troubles"... That's not nearly enough...but it's over...

So I went back to the sewing room...

I have been on quite the kick lately...something started me making these cute little skirts for the grandkids... While at retreat at the beginning of March we visited the local quilt shop. One of the ladies was holding a couple of jelly rolls and I asked her what she was planning to do with them..(as if we need a plan!LOL) She started telling me how she makes her girls the cutest skirts and explained the whole thing to me... I fell in love and immediately grabbed two jelly rolls...

And these are for Ava...

I don't have photos of all the skirts... I made a total of four for Ava and four for Abbie and somehow I ended up making one for Abbie's mothers boss's daughter..(did you get that?)

So then I got brave and bought a pattern for shorts!

Epic fail! They are way too long...the crouch is way too long.and bunches all up..very unflattering even on a 6 year old....and when I had Ava try them on she said "Grandma, this was supposed to be a skirt!".. well, that's the last pair of shorts I make...Apparently the girls would rather have skirts...and they are so much easier to make and fit...

So let's change things around and make something different...

What's wrong with this picture? Look carefully at the ruffle at the top of the photo... Yep..I sewed it on wrong side out. And of course I finished the edge and trimmed it so I spent another 1/2 hour unpicking the whole dang thing... Will revisit this one next week...

The next two days I will be granddaughter watching...our four year old has shingles of all things...she is miserable and isn't sleeping and it hurts and she can't go back to school for two weeks... wish me luck tomorrow..and Friday... I think I'll take the iPad and let her download the cupcake game...lol

And I finished my two blocks for our RedBird Bee...
What did you guess?

Is it -

A.what your mom used to yell at you when you talked too much
B. our new dogs name
C. a new to me etsy shop

If you guessed C...you are right..(well A is also correct, but doesn't fit with this post). A fellow member of the St Louis Modern Quilt Guild gave me heads up when we were talking about our next swap...(which is in one week and I'm still changing my mind!) zipit is a fabulous etsy shop that is filled with zippers...every color imaginable... every size imaginable..and more...

Fast delivery...

Beautiful bright colors...

REASONABLE.... I don't want to say cheap because that makes you think these are inferior...they are not...they are a super bargain...

These were in my hot little hands just 3 days after ordering...

Not only did she send me my zippers, but she added a zipper pull and a Fortune Telling Fish!! Inside that little package is a red cellophane fish...you lay it on the palm of your hand and it curls up...and depending on which end curls your fortune is told... so fun!!

Oh, you don't have to buy all those colors either...you can get any size in any color in any amount...just convo her and she will set up a special listing just for you... That's great customer service....

So if you are need of zippers, check out zipit.. you won't be disappointed...
I am packing up today for a 3 day sewing retreat next week. I think I have 6 or 7 projects ready to go...

Wonder how many I will get to... at least two of the projects are due next Saturday so they will be first done...
Nancy ps. I'll be sewing this weekend. I know! I might even blog!
WithThreadInHand
Nancyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02263122218181506913noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4481807513991858566.post-58713148243391179282012-02-18T16:31:00.000-06:002012-02-18T16:31:30.698-06:00We have a winner....Sorry that it's now Saturday evening and I just picked the winner... What can I say.... The little "procedure" that I was to have yesterday was cancelled...but not before I was on "light food" for a day and then "clear liquids" a day and then drank a gallon of nasty tasting stuff and then showed up only to find out that, I AM, in fact, full of sh*t...and had to reschedule... and now have a whole new schedule of eating that includes TWO DAYS of clear liquid and another gallon of nasty stuff and well...you get the picture......

So on to the winner...

I asked my favorite RNG to pick...
I forgot I have a small procedure scheduled for Friday and wont be hoe HOME , I meant HOME !!!at noon.
Geez......
Nancy
WithThreadInHand
Nancyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02263122218181506913noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4481807513991858566.post-53841278632867280902012-02-13T10:40:00.001-06:002012-02-18T16:20:19.714-06:00Shabby Apple Giveaway....A couple of months ago, I took a full day class at the local Hospice in order to become a volunteer...I knew when we moved that I would need to do something to get out there...and communicate with adults..I could so easily just stay in the sewing room all day... I mentioned something in passing to my daughter (or did she ask me? can't remember) and I signed up.. Volunteers are always needed to visit with patients. I asked to be assigned to the office to help with paperwork. I file, make copies, put together folders and I am sure as the weeks go on, I will learn more projects to keep me busy..

Of course that presents another problem... I needed clothes. Clothes that an adult would wear to work.. Clothes that aren't worn out...and that meant I needed to shop.. So one day right before Christmas said daughter and I went and I actually tried on and bought a ton of tops...and one pair of jeans (yes, as a volunteer, I can wear jeans)..

Now comes the tricky part... accessories.. I have a pair of earrings, a watch and a few rings that Rich has given me over the years... Yet, I don't have that cute stuff.. those pieces that just make the outfit..

Well, I might have found the buying place....

Last week, Shabby Apple contacted me and asked if I would be interested in giving away a piece of jewelry to my readers... I was shocked! I have watched (and entered) giveaways at other blogs, but they were HUGE blogs...with tons of readers...Me? not a big blog...although I love my faithful readers...

And so I went shopping in their accessories department and picked this... It was really hard to choose from all the beautiful vintage pieces...

I think I am finally over the pneumonia and most of my blood work came back ok. We are still trying to figure out why my thyroid numbers are out of whack.. They have been so steady for the past 7 years...oh well...if it isn't one thing it's another!!

I finished all the baby clothes for Abbie's birthday.. I would show you, but that will have to wait until after she opens the package on the 11th. We are having a joint birthday party that evening for Rich (who will turn 60!) and Abbie who will be 4! BBQ pulled pork, coleslaw, mac and cheese, lemon bars for Rich and Abbie's mom will make her birthday cake...

I've done some Christmas sewing...
I have become a bit obsessed with these zipper bags (you too can become obsessed by clicking HERE)
and I have made 5 so far. One has already been filled with packets of Splenda and Sweet-n-low and stuffed into my purse). They go together so fast. You could use them for anything... a little sewing kit, hand embroidery, how about your rotary cutter for retreat?, tea bags, little toys, a deck of cards....really so many ideas... I already have a couple more cut out and ready to put together...but I'm running out of zippers! lol Sorry the photos are so dark...It's been raining since noon and it's just dark and damp and dreary here... :- (

And of course tomorrow is the weekend...and it's not a true weekend unless there is a project in the works... Tomorrow we tackle one of the back hall way closets.. I forgot to get a before photo... All the shelves were full and then there was all this empty space in the middle. We thought we would use the hanging rod, but we don't... So tomorrow there will be full shelves installed..

But even without a pattern, I think it turned out pretty cute..(her favorite color is purple and I was lucky enough to find two fq's). That's a sleeping bag and pillow on the left and the diaper bag is stuffed with pajamas, diapers and outfits.. I am missing the pizza party tonight and really want to give this to her in person, so I sent a "sorry grandma isn't there" card with a gift card to our local store.. That way she still has something from us to open..and I get to see her open this later.
We have been here since the end of October and I still don't have everything the way I want it...although I can sew.. and am trying to make an effort to clean up between projects..

Just as you come into the room is my wall o'stash.. I don't have a huge stash. I used to buy whenever I saw something I liked...When we moved here I gave a big box away to some great friends... It was nice fabric, but my tastes have changed and it wasn't being used. I know it went to good homes..
I now buy fabric for a specific project or I will buy yardage on sale...

Look to the right and you will see my ironing station. Hubby built the big ironing table and those wire basket shelves are just sitting in there.. I really need to recover it...Tomorrow I am off to the big city for a doctor's appt and will stop by Joannes..I have a coupon... And over there to the right of the photo is my wall of embroidery including a counted cross stitch of a quilting bee that my daughter made for me about 7-8 years ago. And underneath is my book shelf.

This is my new wall O'Quilts. Can you see where my taste changed? LOL I started out my quilting career with Pat Sloan and even went on a McCalls quilting cruise where she taught one of the classes... I still love her patterns, I just use modern fabric now! The antique table was in our breakfast room in the other house and I refuse to part with it. This is where my friends will sit and sew with me...as soon as we get Rich out of the house (he has been home far too long!) ...I have two oak chairs that are supposed to be glued up by now! And I guess I need to get all those quilts off the table. All those are tops waiting to be quilted! YIKES!

This is the main sewing area. I have so much more space to spread out! And I love my two banquet tables... My sewing machine sits in a SEWEZI table. I love it...

This is the cutting area.. Another banquet table up on bed risers. I am tall (used to be 5'9", probably now I am around 5'8") and I get such a back ache when I cut at a normal height table... Underneath the table is a set of drawers that right now is mostly empty... And the shelf above holds a lot of collectibles...and really just stop looking at all the crap on the floor on the left there... I DO clean up between projects, BUT I clean up right before I start a new project...NOT after I am finished with one.

So other than the design wall which is the remaining wall that's my sewing room... It's big...23'x17' but remember...I have been married 40 years..I started by sewing with a featherweight (didn't know they would someday be collectible or I would have kept it!) on the kitchen table of a one bedroom apartment.. I have sewn in apartments and houses, bedrooms and basements, kitchen tables and tables in the corner of our bedroom...

And today I did sew...

I finished the sleeping bag for the second granddaughter... Princess...what else? I also cut out a pair of panties for the doll but didn't have any lace for the legs so those are on hold until tomorrow...

I REALLY think this word thing might be working!!
Our Modern Quilt Guild has a free table set up each meeting. We bring anything we think someone else might be able to use... Last Saturday I found a quilt block...

Our illustrious leader must be working on a cute quilt as I fell in love with this block and snatched it up...I heard later it had turned out the wrong size for the quilt. Well, it turned out exactly the right size for these...

I found the free tutorial at A Spoonful of Sugar.. If you have always shied away from zippers this could be the tute for you. She has wonderful large photos of each step... I dare you to make just one!
That one on the right now has a home in my small purse and holds packets of Splenda and Sweet-n-Low... The one on the left is sitting on the shelf in my Christmas Cabinet...

I then turned my attention to some birthdays that are coming up... One is next week...
I have found a lot of new recipes on Cooks Illustrated and after my 14 day trial period on their website, I bought a years subscription. We also get their TV show on Tuesdays on our local PBS channel. I love their recipes. Every single one I have tried has been excellent. We bought filet mignon for the first time in 40 years last week..and followed their recipe for cooking...It was PERFECT!! I used their coconut cake recipe and it was PERFECT! Last week the show was about shrimp...I love shrimp but every time I cook them they get rubbery... Not any more.. last night I made stir fry with shrimp... it was YUMMY!!

Tonight, dinner is going to be Brown Sugar and Bourbon Pork Shoulder..with potato pancakes... ok..to be fair, I got the recipe for the pork shoulder from a guy in the grocery store yesterday. I was looking for Enchilada seasoning (for another recipe) and he picked up two packages of McCormick Brown Sugar and Bourbon Marinade. Hm... I asked him (so unlike me to strike up a conversation with a complete stranger in the grocery store!) if it was good and he told me he used in on Pork Shoulder and it was wonderful...and then told me the secret..."use two packages for a 4 lb roast and add some rosemary to the top of the pork when you bake it" he said.. I snapped up two packages and ran to the meat department.. I will however check out the potato pancake recipe on Cooks Illustrated cause I know it will be perfect...

And yesterday afternoon I had another addition to the sewing room...

I have never picked a "word of the year" before...and maybe that's why I don't seem to be getting much done... I am determined to make a lot of our Christmas presents this year. To that end, I have decided to add a new board to my Pinterest...and would like to invite anyone that wants a present this year to add a link to it... (oh, guess I need to say that you will also had to have been on my list this past year!)... So I need a place to hide all those presents...mostly so I won't give them away early...LOL .. I <strike>tried to help our son carry this up from the basement </strike>the son and the husband to carry this up from the basement and into the sewing room.

I finally got to use my snap setter for the pj's.. The sleeping bag was a quick tute over at Love Bug Living. This isn't a blog I follow, but found a photo pinned on Pinterest... I love Pinterest... I changed one thing on her tute. When I added the elastic I put both pieces on the left bottom side. When I think of a sleeping bag, I always remember folding the bag in half long ways and then rolling it up...so that's what I did...just kind of guessed where to put them and they work perfectly...

So, now this baby has 2 sets of clothes, 1 pair of PJ's , a sleeping bag and a pillow. I will add a Gift Card and am done with one birthday... and I'm early!! Her birthday isn't until the 25th..
